‘Fully known and fully loved’

It is impossible for human beings to know each other completely. Consider our thoughts, for example. We cannot truly know what another person is thinking unless they reveal it to us. But who can honestly say they have shared every single thought they’ve ever had?

Also, we aren’t always completely aware of the motives of our own hearts; how can we reveal them to others, or vice versa?

There is part of us that doesn’t want to be completely known by others, and that is because we are worried about the wrong things we have thought, said and done. We are afraid that others will not love us or that the truth will change the relationship in some way. And that may indeed be the case, depending on the circumstances and people.

The only one who knows us from the inside out is God Himself, our Creator. In this week’s beautiful reading, Psalm 139, David says, “O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar…you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.” The psalm goes on to say that there is nowhere the faithful can go to escape from God’s presence, and that we were known by Him even before we were born. But what is even more incredible than God’s perfect knowledge of us is His perfect love. He knows full well that we do not even come close to meeting His standards of righteousness and holiness, yet, amazingly, He still loves us! Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” He does not love our sin, but He loves us sinners. That’s why He sent His perfect Son to stand in our place on the cross, to pay the penalty for our sins.

So don’t be afraid. There is someone who knows everything there is to know about us, and still loves us. May we trust Him, seek to walk in His ways, and share His love and truth with a world of sinners just like us.
