‘Don’t get too comfortable’

If we needed to describe genuine Christian faith and the true church in one word, ‘comfortable’ would not be the first thing that springs to mind! The Bible makes it clear that following Jesus Christ is far from convenient or easy. It involves self-denial, being willing to lay down our own ambitions, surrendering to God’s will. Following Christ also means imitating His example of costly, self-sacrificial love and service.

These kinds of attitudes do not fit comfortably with the priorities of the unbelieving world. Yet all too often, those who describe themselves as ‘Christians’ and members of churches can in fact become too comfortable in this world – reflecting the values and beliefs of secular and neo-pagan society rather than the faith clearly laid out in Scripture. For some, the church is little more than a hobby to take up in retirement or a social club to belong to, rather than a radical and loving community and family united through common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and shaped by the word of God.

Philippians 2 gives us a picture of authentic Christianity and the church that is distinctly uncomfortable, but persuasive and powerful. Paul says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…” The passage goes on to quote what was probably an ancient Christian poem or hymn, describing how Christ, although He is God, humbled Himself by becoming human and even submitting Himself to death on a cross. This mindset of love and humility is pleasing to God, and a convincing witness to those who do not yet know Him.

So may we not seek to fit in and get too comfortable in this world, but be courageously distinctive, living for Christ together in the power of the Spirit, and standing out for all the right reasons.
