‘The value of integrity’

The media loves a story about some scandal or other, whether it involves sportspeople, politicians, religious leaders or other public figures. People are understandably outraged when those in high profile or leadership positions engage in misconduct, corruption or other immoral behaviour. After all, people with authority, visibility or influence need to set a good example to others.

Whether in the public eye or not, we are all sinful and we will make mistakes. That is why the gospel is such wonderful news, because it gives hope and assurance that our sins need not define us. God still loves us, and forgives us completely if we repent and believe in His Son. But as Paul says, “shall we go on sinning so that grace may abound? By no means!” (Romans 6:1, 2). The Holy Spirit empowers us to resist the temptation to sin, including taking some practical steps. You may have heard of the “Billy Graham rule” – the evangelist famously committed to never spending time alone with a woman other than his wife. He’s not the only one who followed that principle, and it only relates to the sin of adultery, but it’s still a helpful rule.

In this week’s Bible reading from Genesis 39, we encounter another person who lived with integrity. Joseph literally fled when a married woman tried to seduce him. She then falsely accused him of attacking her, and used her position of influence to have him thrown in prison.

Yet Joseph’s faithfulness did not go unnoticed by God, who continued to work through Joseph until circumstances changed so that he could walk free again.

Although there are temptations around us, although we will not be perfect in this life, may we strive to reflect God’s holiness. And through our integrity, let us “make the teaching about God our Saviour attractive” (Titus 2:10), that others may also come to experience His life-transforming grace.
